A unique combination of landscape, wildlife and heritage makes the Blackdown Hills a place of national importance and interest.
A range of landscape patterns forms a complex and beautiful visual mosaic. It is an unspoilt rural area relatively undisturbed by modern development, a stronghold for some rare habitats and precious species.
The shape of the landscape is a result of a unique geology, shared with the neighbouring East Devon AONB. This is what gives the place its flat plateaux, sharp ridges and spring-lined valleys.
There is also great architectural value in the small, traditional hamlets and isolated farmsteads, as well as more ancient features such as hill forts.
